Rossmin, a stalwart in the field of biodiversity management, stands at the forefront of sustainable practices, together with Ezemvelo and CREW. With the launch of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in December 2022, Rossmin's unwavering commitment to responsible biodiversity stewardship has found even stronger resonance.
At the heart of Rossmin's endeavours lies its partnership with local izinyanga (herbalists). Rossmin allows these practitioners to responsibly harvest medicinal plants within the Rossmin Biodiversity Offset Area (BOA). Moreover, Rossmin plays a pivotal role in assisting izinyanga in identifying and managing the rich diversity of plant species present in the BOA. This partnership not only preserves traditional knowledge but also ensures the sustainable harvesting of invaluable medicinal plants, highlighting Rossmin's dedication to biodiversity conservation.
The GBF, unveiled at the 15th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15), heralds a new era in global biodiversity conservation. It champions the sustainable use of wildlife, a vision in perfect alignment with Rossmin's ethos.
The GBF places substantial emphasis on the term "wild," signalling a shift in international conservation policy. It not only prioritizes increasing wildlife populations but also connects this objective to their sustainable utilization for human benefit.
Specifically, the GBF's targets underscore the importance of ensuring that the use, harvesting, and trade of wild species are sustainable, safe, and legal (Target 5). It further emphasizes that the management and use of wild species should be sustainable, providing social, economic, and environmental benefits for people (Target 9).
Rossmin wholeheartedly embraces the GBF's vision and actively collaborates with local communities, landowners, entrepreneurs, investors, consumers, conservationists, rural developers, and policymakers to foster sustainable wildlife enterprise. Rossmin's commitment extends to the sustainable utilization of the biodiversity areas it manages, ensuring that these ecosystems thrive for generations to come.
In essence, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and CBD COP15 decisions empower us with a global mandate to cultivate partnerships for the responsible use of biodiversity. Rossmin, as a pioneer in this field, is steadfast in its mission, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable biodiversity management and working diligently to protect and conserve our planet's invaluable natural resources. Together, with our partners, we shape a future where biodiversity thrives, and communities prosper harmoniously with the environment.
